NWO/NRO| Comenius grants - innovative education
The Comenius program aims to enable teachers/researchers to put their vision of education into practice and supports the implementation of educational innovations that directly contribute to the renewal and improvement of higher education in the Netherlands. The program offers scholarships to Teaching Fellows, Senior Fellows and Leadership Fellows.

Deadlines for all grants have been published.

As in the previous editions, three themes have been set for the Teaching and Senior Fellow scholarships and an additional fourth free theme.

Theme 1: Inclusive education.
Theme 2: Education/Identity formation.
Theme 3: Connection with society.
Theme 4: Free theme - the entire width of 'De waarde(n) van weten\The value(s) of knowledge’.

Although not an official Comenius theme, teachers/researchers interested in submitting a project on internationalization are especially invited to do so and will receive advice and support from the University’s Internationalization Policy Officer.

You are interested in Comenius but struggling with a clear idea?
Colleagues from Teachers Development invite teachers to submit on the following topics in a joint effort:

1. Assessing group work
Collaborative group or team skills are important 21st century skills and they are also important skills for increasing student employability in the job market. In response to these, more and more courses at Tilburg University use group work as both learning activities and assessment method. However, the collaborative learning literature does not yet provide sufficient guidelines in assessing and grading group work. In particular, it is not clear how to better facilitate group process and at the same time track individual contributions. As for grading, individual contributions during the group process are inside the black box. Many teachers use peer assessment and grading as a solution but it remains a complicated process for students to carry it out properly and it in turn triggers student negative emotional reactions to this practice.

The aim of this proposal is to design an assessment tool that can fully support the group process, scaffold peer assessment procedures, and track individual contributions. This tool will also train students to carry out stepwise peer assessment so that peer assessment ensures an acceptable level of validity, reliability and transparency. Only when these quality criteria are met, peer assessment results can be useful for grading purposes.

2. Video and learning or assessment
Video is very suitable for addressing difficult subject matter, but also for a simple how-to explanation or to include topics and places that cannot be discussed in class. New fields that have not been researched within Tilburg university are: The use of student-generated clips, either for checking student understanding or demonstrating skills in a formative or summative way or to learn from peers, as this has been proven to be very successful and convincing under certain circumstances.

Besides skills and knowledge, videos can be used to provide feedback to students. The combination of visual as well as auditive information caters students in different preferences of learning. This helps students to better understand feedback, as video feedback is more personal and richer than written feedback.

3. Reflection assessment
The ultimate goal of higher education is to train students to be able to self-reflect their own learning and carry out continuous improvement in their lifelong learning. Unfortunately, reflective learning and practices are regarded as personal learning and they are seldom taught in the formal educational settings. The misunderstanding of personal reflection should stay personal and informal has resulted a gap in the didactic design for developing critical reflection and its assessment.

Reflective learning and practices should be designed at the higher program-curriculum level. The development of reflection skills takes time and it needs to be embedded in the design of curriculum. In addition, the assessment of reflection should be carefully designed in the program assessment plan.

The aim of this proposal is to develop an “All-in-one tool” that guides students to develop critical reflection throughout their learning in different phases. This tool can also track the development in self-reflection, provide feedback on their progress and assess the degree of criticality of student reflection.

Comenius Teaching Fellows: The Teaching Fellow, supported by a team of colleagues, advisers and students, can use the €50,000 grant to implement an educational innovation project. The proposed project must take place within the context of a single, defined study program (course/subject learning pathway/skills trajectory, etc.), for which the Fellow is responsible. Projects have a duration of one academic year, plus any start-up period from the time the grant is awarded until the start of the academic year. Deadlines: Letter of intent: September 10th. Pre-proposal: October 8th. Full proposal: January 9th.
Please take notice that submission of a letter of intent (LoI) is mandatory in order to submit an application. The LoI is a simple, administrative online process. If interested, please contact Lies Siemons.

Comenius Senior Fellows: The Senior Fellow and their team members can use the €100,000 grant to implement an educational innovation project that will have impact on education in a faculty, a degree program or a substantial study program of a higher education institution. Projects have a duration of two academic years, plus any start-up period from the time the grant is awarded until the start of the academic year. Deadlines: Letter of intent: September 3rd. Pre-proposal: October 1st. Full proposal: December 3rd. One application may be submitted by each school.
Please take notice that submission of a letter of intent (LoI) is mandatory in order to submit an application. The LoI is a simple, administrative online process. If interested, please contact Lies Siemons to be considered in the university internal procedure.
